Privacy Policy

The short version

• ✓Camera and microphone are used only while a mission is running, and everything they capture is processed on your device.
• ✓No photo or video taken during a mission is ever saved or uploaded.

• ✓No account, no ads, and we never sell your data.

What stays on your device

Your alarms and settings

Alarm times, labels, repeat days, chosen missions, themes and sounds are stored in a database on your phone, along with your app settings. We never receive them.

Your wake history and streak

Each time an alarm resolves, Rousr records the outcome locally — whether you completed the mission, snoozed, cancelled, or missed it, along with the time and which mission it was. This is what draws your streak, wake calendar, statistics and badges. It stays on your phone.

Camera — the pushup and photo missions

The pushup mission uses on-device pose detection to count your reps from the live camera feed. The photo mission compares what the camera sees to a reference you saved yourself. In both cases the camera frames are analysed in memory as the mission runs and then discarded. No image from a mission is written to storage, and none is uploaded. The photo mission compares mathematical representations of the images, not the images themselves.

The one image Rousr does keep is the reference photo you deliberately register when setting up a photo mission — the kettle, the bathroom sink, wherever you want to be standing. It is saved in Rousr's private storage, which other apps cannot read, and is deleted when you replace it or delete that alarm. It is excluded from cloud backup, so it is never uploaded to your Google Drive. If you migrate directly to a new phone, it travels with the transfer so your photo alarms keep working.

Microphone — the read-aloud mission

The read-aloud mission listens only while that mission is on screen, and only to check that you said the line. Rousr does not record, save, or upload audio.

One honest caveat: Rousr uses Android's own speech recognition. On most phones this runs entirely offline. Some devices have no offline recogniser and can only transcribe with a network connection — on those, your speech is processed by your device's speech service (usually Google's) under Google's privacy policy, not ours. Rousr tells you when your device is in that state, and you can simply choose a different mission.

What leaves your device

Rousr uses two Google Firebase services. Both are disabled in development builds and active only in the version you install from Google Play.

Crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)

When Rousr crashes or hits an error, a report is sent to Google so we can fix it. It contains the technical details of the failure, your device model and Android version, the app version, and an app-generated installation identifier. It does not contain your alarms, your photos, or your audio. We pay particular attention to errors on the alarm path, because an alarm that fails to ring is the worst bug this app can have.

Usage statistics (Firebase Analytics)

Rousr records a small set of anonymous events so we can tell whether the app is actually working: which onboarding steps people reach, and — when an alarm resolves — whether the mission was completed, snoozed, cancelled or missed, which mission type it was, and how many snoozes were used. These events carry no alarm labels, no photos, no audio, and nothing you typed.

Firebase Analytics also collects a standard set of information automatically, including an app instance identifier, device and region information, and your device's advertising ID. We do not use this for advertising — Rousr shows no ads — but the collection is part of the service. You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in your Android settings under Privacy → Ads. Data handled by these services is processed by Google under Google's privacy policy.

Backup

If you have Android's backup switched on, your alarms, wake history and settings are backed up to your own Google account, so a new phone doesn't cost you a long streak. That backup belongs to you, not to us, and we cannot read it. Your photo-mission reference images are deliberately excluded from it.

Permissions, and why

• •Camera — the pushup and photo missions. Live capture only; Rousr never reads your photo gallery.
• •Microphone — the read-aloud mission, while it is on screen.
• •Notifications, exact alarms, full-screen notifications, wake lock — so the alarm can ring at the exact time you set and show itself over the lock screen.
• •Start on boot — so your alarms survive a restart.
• •Ignore battery optimisation (optional) — stops the system delaying your alarm. Rousr works without it, less reliably on some phones.
• •Display over other apps (optional) — lets the alarm screen return to the front if you navigate away mid-ring.
• •Internet — used only to send the crash and usage data described above, and to fetch the on-device vision models the first time a mission needs them.

Your choices

You can revoke the camera or microphone permission at any time in Android's app settings; the missions that need them will simply stop being available. Clearing Rousr's app data erases your alarms, history and reference photos immediately, and uninstalling removes everything Rousr stored on your device. You can reset your advertising ID in your Android privacy settings.

Because Rousr has no account, we hold nothing that identifies you personally. If you would like the crash and usage data associated with your installation deleted, email us and we will remove what we can identify.

Children

Rousr is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has used the app and you would like their data removed, contact us.

Changes to this policy

If Rousr's data handling changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change with it. Meaningful changes will be announced in the app or on the Google Play listing.
